LIFESTYLE ADVICE

The first step in achieving and maintaining good health is a positive attitude and taking personal responsibility and the appropriate action to achieve good health. Thus, your first priority should be to prevent disease by avoiding any conditions or circumstances which may be doing you damage. For example, overeating and a lack of exercise will result in weight gain with its flow-on problems. If you experience insomnia, it would be best for you to avoid caffeinated products such as coffee, tea and cola. If you are suffering with chronic bronchitis, it would be of much benefit for you to avoid cold draughts, fried foods and excess dairy foods. Or if you suffer with ongoing stress or anxiety, then exercise, yoga and meditation would benefit you greatly.

Following is a list of some other essentials for obtaining and maintaining good health:

Abundant clean, filtered water

As we all know, water is absolutely critical for our survival. The average person needs to drink 2-3 litres of good quality water each day. Many diseases and bodily disorders are caused by insufficient water intake. Did you know that a very common cause of headaches is dehydration?

Regular exercise

Exercise gives you greater endurance, improves body strength and helps you function more efficiently, preventing disease. It also makes you look and feel much better and improves your sleep. Stress, anxiety, depression and feelings of inadequacy are greatly diminished with regular exercise. Although this is common knowledge, so many people still continually find excuses not to exercise. If you are not exercising as often as you know you should be, then you know what you need to do! It is important to establish a healthy balance incorporating strengthening, stretching and aerobic exercises. Getting the help of a personal trainer, either in a one on one or group arrangement may be just what you need to revitalise your health. I can refer you to a suitable trainer to help get you started.

Adequate rest, recuperation and sleep
Repair and regeneration to your body are most rapid when activity is reduced. Good sleep helps to return vigour and vitality to your body and mind and remove a large number of toxins. Adequate sleep (usually 7 or 8 hours per day) is also necessary to maintain a healthy weight. Chronic sleep deprivation will result in many other health problems as well. These may include: depression, accelerated aging including more wrinkles, lowered libido, increased toxicity, irritability, memory loss, fatigue, relationship problems, addictive behaviours and higher accident rates. Meditation should also be an integral part of your life. You need to regularly find some space and a little time to reflect on what is happening in your life, attune in peace with your thoughts, and bring some serenity back into your possibly hectic life. Inadequate rest is a problem inherent in our fast-paced modern society. It is imperative that you rebalance yourself when fatigued, otherwise poor health will soon follow.

Deep breathing exercises

Breath is the bridge between the body and the mind. Correct breathing habits are crucial for continued vitality, powers of resistance to disease and longevity. Your vital life force can be channeled in different ways, directed by certain breathing techniques.
